Faith Over Fear: Part 2

I called my folks and siblings, filling them in on what had transpired, this support system… ni God. I was about 5 min from alighting when Samurai called, and I told him I would be with him in a few minutes. The first stop I made was to Tim Bett. No sooner had I sat down than my phone rang again. Sylvia Sonie Kim was frantic; my samurai had convulsed, come out of it, and was unresponsive. This was the first time I had an idea of what was happening to him. But convulsion???!!!

I rushed out, and we took him back to the doctor who had attended to him earlier. The diagnosis according to him was low oxygen levels and food poisoning, but with the convulsions, it did not make sense to me. After the convulsions, Samurai was weak and couldn’t walk, so he lay down until he could get his strength back. The convulsions had taken a toll on his body.

Tim had bought him something to eat, although he threw it up; my cousin had fed him, and the same thing happened. We let him sleep for about an hour, sorted the bills thanks to Gladys Njiraini and headed back to the city. On the way home, he told me he had convulsed in school according to what his bedmate told him, but he had no idea what else had happened as he only came to in the dispensary close to their school. This became the second account of a convulsion.

Saturday was spent in the hospital getting checked. We got referrals to a cardiologist because of the low oxygen levels diagnosis. Tests were done, and there was no evidence of food poisoning, so we ditched the drugs he had been put on for this, and our rounds started the following week. Sunday, we went to church; thank God for the amazing community here. All this time I had not witnessed the convulsions, and I was not looking forward to it, but… my time would come.

We saw a cardiologist; an ECG was done; he got a clean bill of health; we did an ultrasound of his heart; everything was good. They checked his pulse everywhere; it was fine, and then we got sent to a neurologist, and at the time, it was a clean bill of health.

We got referred to an adolescent pediatrician, who unfortunately would be away for an extended period of time, and Samurai had already been away from school for a week, exhibiting zero signs of illness. He went back at the end of that week, and there were no incidents in school. The only thing we were asked to monitor by the neurologist was headache frequencies he used to get a lot of those…and sometimes I would joke that he took after me hiyo area.

We breezed through the term, of course with me monitoring every so often through his class teacher at the time. Samurai, Ninja, and Princess K came home for the December holidays, and kama kawaida after a short stay with me, they traveled to my parents to go finish off their (our parents) chicken
